Fiction:I f I feel no pain, I don’t have a cavity
If your tooth begins to hurt, it could mean that the tooth decay has progressed and a root canal may be needed. The longer you go without a dental check up, the more painful and expensive the fix may be. Make sure you schedule regular dental exams so your dentist can look for the signs of tooth decay and fix the problem before it gets worse.
Fact: Sugar can cause cavities
Sugar can indeed cause cavities, but it is not sugar alone you should blame. Sugar is not only found in candies and cookies but in bread, fruit, potatoes and other foods as well. The sugars in these foods interact with the bacteria in your mouth to create acids that will eat at your teeth. With that in mind, it is increasingly important to practice daily dental care. Your dental routine should include brushing and rinsing twice a day as well as flossing once a day. If you fail to clean your teeth daily, plaque begins to form and can turn to acid when carb heavy foods are eaten.
Fiction: Sugar free food items don’t contribute to cavities
It is not just sugar that can create the perfect breeding ground for cavities, but anything that makes your mouth more acidic. For instance, having a sugar free soda is better than a sugary one, but all sodas have a low pH which creates tooth erosion.
Fact: You can’t stop a cavity once it starts
You can decrease the speed of decay and even stop it, but you can’t fully repair the damage once it is done.
