If you have a damaged or missing tooth, a dental crown may be the right fit for you. Dental crowns are a natural looking cap that is shaped just like your tooth. It is used to cover the area where a tooth is missing to provide you with a complete and full smile once again.
Once the tooth has been worn down to the point where it cannot have a filling to restore it, a dental crown may be your best option. Dental crowns act as a cover and support to a tooth with a larger than normal filling. They also help maintain the structure of a cracked tooth to assist with hindering additional damage. They can also restore broken teeth and cover misshapen or discolored teeth.
What the procedure involves
A dental crown procedure will take place over the course of two separate appointments. During the first visit, the tooth that requires the crown will be reshaped or filed. This will enable the crown to fit snugly and securely around the tooth. Throughout the procedure, the area around the tooth will be numb to allow the patient to have optimum comfort. An impression will then be done of the teeth with the use of putty or paste. The mold will then be sent to a lab where a custom crown will be created. For the few weeks while the crown is being prepared, the patient will be provided with a temporary crown. At the second appointment, the crown is finally placed on the tooth and proper fit and color are assessed.
What can I expect from a dental crown?
Dental crowns are aesthetically pleasing as well as strong. They can actually handle the same pressures as the original tooth, allowing patients to eat, smile, talk, and interact normally.
Crown restorations can be done using different materials including: metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM crowns), resin, ceramic, or porcelain.
