Invisible aligners, often officially referred to as Invisalign, are a wonderful option for straightening teeth for those who do not want metal brackets in their mouth. While braces utilize brackets linked to wires to make teeth move, invisible aligners are custom made retainers that fit over the teeth. Invisalign is known as the largest producer of these clear liners.
Can I get invisible aligners?
Depending on your age and situation, invisible aligners may not be right for you. They are custom built for a tight fit, so they are usually only used for older teens and adults. Braces are often the optimal choice for children and younger teens because their mouths are still developing and growing. Invisible aligners are used on patients who have mild to moderately crowded or crooked teeth or slight spacing problems. Patients with severe crossbites, overbites, or underbites may need more involved treatment.
How do invisible aligners work?
Once you and your orthodontist decide to use invisible aligners to straighten your teeth, a treatment plan will be made. You will need to be fitted for your invisible aligners throughout your treatment duration to make slight adjustments. Overtime, these small adjustments will move your teeth to the appropriate spot.
Invisible aligners are made of clear plastic or acrylic. They fit snugly over the teeth but can be taken out for flossing, brushing, and eating. Normally, you will get a new aligner every couple of weeks as your teeth adjust.
How long do I need to wear invisible aligners?
Invisible aligners need to be used for as long as it takes to get the teeth to move to the appropriate spot. The more severe your bite or crooked your teeth, the longer it will take to achieve the proper alignment. As a general rule, you can plan on treatment taking between 10 and 24 months.
